What is the WCJ Memorial Scholarship?

It’s a college scholarship created in memory of Willie Clifton Joffrion to help students pursue higher education without financial barriers.

Who can apply?

High school seniors graduating this academic year who meet the following criteria:

  • • GPA of 2.8 or higher
  • • First-generation college student
  • • Accepted and enrolled in a 2- or 4-year accredited college/university
  • • Demonstrate financial need

What do I need to submit?

Required:

  • • Essay (550–750 words)
  • • Official high school transcript
  • • College acceptance letter
  • • Statement of financial need (150-200 words)
  • • Two letters of recommendation (one from a teacher or administrator at your current high school)
  • • Current photo
  • • Proof of full-time enrollment

Optional:

  • • 2-3 sentences on how being a first-generation college student has shaped your educational journey
  • • Resume

When is the deadline?

Applications are due by June 1st of the year you plan to enroll.

How much is the scholarship?

Award amounts vary annually based on available funds and need. The scholarship is renewable for up to four years with proof of academic progress and maintaining a minimum 2.8 GPA.
