Founder & Inspiration Behind the WCJ Memorial Scholarship
Willie Clifton Joffrion—affectionately known as "Buddy"—was the third of seven children born in Alexandria, Louisiana. A proud graduate of Peabody High School (Class of 1960), Willie dreamed of becoming a doctor and enrolled at Southern University, but financial hardship forced him to withdraw.
Determined to succeed, Willie enlisted in the United States Air Force, serving as an Air Force Maintenance Specialist. His service took him around the world, and eventually to Alaska, where he met and married Edna Richards. Together, they built a life of love, resilience, and service.
After his military service, Willie worked for the Army & Air Force Exchange Service (AAFES), rising from dishwasher to District Manager over a 25-year career.
Though Willie achieved much in life, he never forgot the sting of being unable to afford college. Inspired by the words, "A mind is a terrible thing to waste," Willie vowed to help others pursue the opportunities he was denied.
Before his passing, he asked that his savings and assets be used to create a scholarship fund for students in need. On June 6, 2024, his wish became reality with the establishment of the WCJ Memorial Scholarship.
